Automatic shutdown after network inactivity

For my NAS, I tried a few options to go more green and save some energy. Besides the WOL which works well, I set up the NAS to shut down after some time of network inactivity (or at least few activity). Read more of this post


Backup and restore of installed packages on Ubuntu

To backup the list of currently installed software (e.g for a reinstall of the system), type:

sudo dpkg --get-selections > installedpackages

(and copy the file to a location which will still be available after the repartitioning and formatting of the hdd during new installation 😉 )

To reinstall the packages:

sudo dpkg --set-selections < installedpackages
sudo dselect

Ubuntu Home Server – Part 3: Samba File Server Setup

In this part, I am doing a basic setup of Samba as a file server for my clients at home. I want to grant access to the drive to all my local Win* and Linux users.

If samba is not already installed and running, you have to install it first as a prerequisite. Furthermore the smbclient is helpful and will therefore be installed, too.

sudo apt-get install samba smbclient
